The meeting opened with an illustrated talk on Fire Safety in the Home given by Fire Officer Mike Megginson. Mike discussed the Fire Hydrant situation in our area in response to concerns we had raised in the past. He said that each fire tender had access to map references of Hydrants via central control room. Also hydrants are checked regularly. Scotland is well above the UK average for fire related deaths. The Majority caused by cigarettes, overloaded power sockets and chip pans. Mike's summary was, have a fire action plan that you and your family have worked out, in particular escape routes. Close all doors when you go to bed, an enclosed fire may burn itself out. If you are trapped try to block gaps around door, fire takes about 30 minutes to break through, average response time in our area 7 minutes. Fit Smoke alarms and test them regularly. If there is a fire Get out quickly, call the fire brigade and stay out. In rural areas like ours it is a good idea to give your map reference. The cost of the service is £32 per person per year.
1. MINUTES of the meeting of 20 August 2001 was approved.
2. MATTERS ARISING

Proposed Wind Generators on Meikle Carewe
The National Air Traffic Control service had said that the safety problems had still not been resolved, despite assurances given in March that it would be resolved in six weeks! Philip had received a letter regarding TV reception, where NTL stated that 'Solutions to TV reception problem should be possible - but could be very costly for the developers. Mike mentioned that the Independent had mentioned a windfarm site at Inverurie. Rob said that a number of objectors had written to the council reiterating their views, also some new objectors. It would appear that the matter will go to the planning committee in October.

  Website
Kevin reported that the website contains the August minutes, tonight's Agenda and local information. There is an email address that diverts mail to the Secretary. The local map is online. Kees asked if we would allow Groups like the Scouts and Guides access. We do have the capacity but it would be better to have 'links' to other sites. Mike asked if we could charge, but it was agreed not to.
  Tree screening
The upkeep of the site at Nether Muirskie is now the responsibility of Mr Thomson and we will be asking him to replace missing trees.
  Community Council Boundary
No new progress.
  Road sign at Blairs
The Roads department had responded to our letter and were arranging to re-site the signs.
  South Deeside View
Items to be in by 20th September.
3. Police Report
PC Steve Collins reported that the area had been fairly quiet since our last meeting. There were a number of minor accidents and instances of careless driving reported, but there had been a significant improvement with regards to speeding motorists. On the South Deeside and Netherley roads, Eight drivers had been reported and four educated. Mike Birch felt that there were more incidents than those mentioned. PC Collins said that he could only comment on those reported to the police. Robert added that a major problem was that minor cases were often not reported as the drivers were able to remove their vehicles before the police were involved, this had the added effect of our being unable to prove to the Council, that certain bends and junctions were dangerous and in need of upgrading, as the Council only took note of reported incidents. If you see an incident even minor, please report it to the police. A break-in at Blairs via the front door and a television stolen. Another attempted break-in at Blairs was foiled by window locks. It was reported that a vehicle had been left in a field at Banchory-Devenick for some time, when would it be removed. At the same site an unoccupied cottage had a broken window. PC Collins would investigate. It was commented that a 'police aware' sticker on accidents and abandoned vehicles saves people stopping to investigate abandoned cars.
4. PLANNING
The family that were hoping to start an organic farm on a site on the Netherley Road at Maryculter, explained their situation and apologized if they had upset people by putting residential caravans on the site without permission. They had met with council officers and had applied for retrospective permission for the caravans, and they would be presenting a business plan to back up their application. They were concerned that the local newspapers had been involved. Hazel said that our meetings were public and summaries of the meetings were given to local papers.
